Degree Programs
Department of Music curricula are designed to prepare students for
professional careers in music, to give all students opportunities to understand themselves and the world around them through participation
and study of musical arts, and to contribute to the artistic and
cultural life of the University and broader community.
The UE Department of
Music offers the following areas of study: music performance, music education, music therapy, music management
and general studies in music. Programs culminating in a certificate in Suzuki Violin Pedagogy and Sacred Music
are open to qualified students on any music degree program. Auditions are required for entry into all
degree programs.
The department has been a member of the National Association of
Schools of Music since 1948. Entrance and graduation requirements are in
accordance with published regulations of NASM.
Music Therapy
The music therapy program combines the study of music with the study of its influence on human behavior.
Music therapy students obtain clinical experience in local
hospitals, schools and other facilities. A six-month
clinical internship is required following four years of academic
work. Upon completion of the internship, the graduate is eligible
to apply for board certification and for membership with the American
Music Therapy Association.
- Music therapy alumni work in hospitals, state institutions,
retirement facilities, nursing homes, hospice programs and educational settings across the country as well as in private practice.

prepares students for certification at the K-12 levels for each chosen discipline.
Double
Major in Music Therapy and Music Education
This
program is for students interested in combining their skills and talents
as a music therapist and music educator. A careful selection of courses ensures
the requirements for both degrees are met. All course work and student teaching are
completed in five years, followed by a music therapy internship. Successful
completion of both degrees qualifies students for certification in both music therapy and music education.
Music Management
This degree program combines music and business studies for the student
interested in working in the music industry. Graduates are well qualified
through their academic background and internship experiences
for a wide range of employment opportunities in the music industry.
Having completed the business core, graduates may also work in general
business or industry fields or be admitted to graduate school to pursue
a Master of Business Administration degree. The music courses
allow pursuit of studio teaching, a graduate music degree or a
performance career.
- Recent graduates work in operations
and development positions with major orchestras and opera companies
as well as with instrument manufacturers, in retail sales and in

the freshman and sophomore years. To promote student success acceptance is
highly selective. -
