Jonas Thoms, Consortium Instructor

         Jonas Thoms is acting consortium instructor of horn at the University of Evansville and acting principal horn of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Thoms received his Bachelor of Music in horn performance from the Eastman School of Music and his Master of Music in horn performance from the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music (CCM).
         Thoms also currently serves at third horn of the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and previously served as co-principal horn of the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra in Glens Falls, New York. He has performed as a substitute or extra player with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and the Albany Symphony Orchestra as well as a number of regional orchestras in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and New York. His teachers include W. Peter Kurau, Randy Gardner, Elizabeth Freimuth, and Kristy Morrell.
         As a teacher, Thoms served as horn instructor at the University of Cincinnati-CCM Preparatory Department in 2008-09. While studying at CCM, he served as the graduate assistant to the horn studio of Randy Gardner where his duties included private and classroom instruction as well conducting horn choir. In addition, he has maintained a private studio of students ranging from elementary to high school.
         Thoms is a member of the International Horn Society and the American Federation of Musicians. He performs on a custom horn made by horn builder Darin Sorley of Indianapolis.

Kenneth Steinsultz, Assistant Professor

         Kenneth Steinsultz is the director of bands and low brass instructor at the University of Evansville. He formerly served as assistant to the Director of Bands at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Steinsultz holds degrees from Quincy University and the University of Illinois.
         Steinsultz is a member of the Board of Directors for the Evansville Symphonic Band. He also serves as principal euphonium for the Evansville Symphonic Band. In March 2009 Steinsultz was featured soloist with the Bend in the River Brass Band. In July 2008 he was the featured euphonium soloist with the Concert Band of Central Illinois. Steinsultz was guest soloist with the University of Illinois Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble at the Army Band (Pershing's Own) Tuba/Euphonium Conference in January 2007, and in February 2008 he was a feature artist for the Urbana (Illinois) High School sixth annual guest artist concert. In April 2005, he was guest clinician for the Association of Concert Bands national conference and performed as a guest artist on the finale concert.
         Steinsultz has served as music director at Lewistown (Illinois) Community High School and director of bands for Brown County Unit Schools in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, prior to his appointment at the University of Illinois. He has been a member of the Quincy Park Band, Quincy Symphony Orchestra, and Mississippi River Brass Band. He has performed with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Danville (Illinois) Symphony, Illinois Symphony of Springfield/Bloomington, and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. In the summers of 2003 and 2004, he was co-director of the Mark Foutch Brass Band in Champaign, Illinois.
         He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Indiana Bandmasters Association, Barbershop Harmony Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (honorary membership), and other professional organizations.

Timothy Zifer, Associate Professor

Dr. Zifer completed a bachelor's degree in music education at Ohio University in 1990, a master of music in trumpet performance at Louisiana State University in 1993, and a doctorate in trumpet performance with a minor in wind conducting at Louisiana State University in 2001. He serves UE as professor of trumpet, director of jazz studies, and degree advisor and director of the music management program. Prior to his appointment as director of jazz studies, he served as director of bands (1996-2008). During this time the University of Evansville wind ensemble toured over 20 states and appeared at the 2001 International Trumpet Guild Conference, competed in the 2002 International Hawaiian Music Festival, and performed at the 2006 and 2008 Indiana Music Educators Association conventions. Zifer and the wind ensemble also commissioned several works by noted composers Eric Ewazen, Lowell Liebermann, Andrew Rindfliesch, and Ty Alan Emerson. He is the principal trumpet of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, and he has performed recitals throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Most recently he served as trumpet soloist with the Hong Kong Baptist University Orchestra on their 2007 Tour of China. in 2001 he served as the conference host for the International Trumpet Guild Conference at the University. The conference brought in over 800 attendees from around the world and featured recitals, lectures, exhibits, and clinics by some of the world's leading trumpet professionals. Zifer is currently collaborating with Anne Fiedler, professor of piano, to produce a recording featuring the works of Halsey Stevens, Kent Kennan, Paul Hindemith, Jean Francaix, and Gustav Mahler.
