Music Therapy
Established in 1975, the music therapy
program is committed to providing quality education and training that focuses
on the current populations served and the interventions used by music therapy
professionals in the field. The program is approved by the American Music
Therapy Association (AMTA) and is accredited by the National Association of
Schools of Music (NASM).
The undergraduate program combines
professional coursework in music therapy with supervised practicum experiences
beginning in the freshman year. The degree prepares students for the six-month
internship, following completion of the academic and field placement
experiences, and fulfills eligibility requirements to sit for the national
examination in music therapy offered by the Certification Board for Music
Therapists. Upon passing the exam, the credential, Music Therapist-Board
Certified (MT-BC) is granted.
Currently, over 170 students
have completed the program and a great majority have had, and continue to have,
successful careers, employed in a variety of clinical settings (hospitals,
nursing homes, school systems) and private practice.
