The jazz program at the University of
Evansville was founded in 1968 by its present director, Dr. Edwin Lacy. The
program originally consisted of a single ensemble. Today, the jazz curriculum
includes two full-sized bands (17 members) and smaller ensembles of three to
seven members. The bands are directed by Dr. Lacy and by Prof. Renato Butturi,
UE guitar instructor.

In addition to campus appearances,
the ensembles perform other concerts in the area, including school concerts,
festivals and occasional tours. Nationally known soloists and clinicians who
have made guest appearances on campus include Clark Terry, Stan Kenton, Steve
Wright, Jamey Aebersold, Roger Pemberton, Ron Jones, Gary Burton and Ashley
Alexander.
Also included are courses in jazz history, jazz theory and improvisation. Membership in all ensembles and
classes is open to music students as well as all qualified members of the
University community. Full academic credit is given for participation.
Students also have an opportunity to
hear and to interact with outstanding professional jazz musicians through the
“University of Evansville Jazz Guest Artist Concert Series,” which presents about four or five concerts each year.
Many alumni of the jazz ensembles are
teaching in the public schools, while others have gone on to perform
professionally.
All types of contemporary big-band
jazz are performed by the various ensembles, showing the influence of styles
from swing to rock. The members are proficient in other types of music, as they
also perform in the University’s Orchestra, concert bands and chamber groups.
Additional opportunities for professional experience are available to more
advanced students in show bands, dance bands and night clubs throughout the
Evansville metropolitan area.
